Work has begun on a $36.9 million New York State Department of Transportation project to rehabilitate the Fort Hamilton Parkway bridge over the Gowanus Expressway in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. The 1964 span links Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, and Windsor Terrace; the current contract calls for completion by summer 2027 and is expected to extend the bridge’s service life by roughly 40 years.

Work will replace the bridge deck and approach slabs, upgrade the steel superstructure, bearings, piers, and abutments, and install new street- and under-deck lighting. A protected north-bound bike lane will be added, tying into existing lanes on Fort Hamilton Parkway and 7th Avenue, while the existing parking lane and sidewalks are retained. ADA-compliant curb ramps are also included.

Construction is being staged to keep traffic moving: the left travel lane will close first, followed by a shift onto the newly built deck so the right lane can be reconstructed.
